Tony Lopez
Senior Managing Director, FTI Consulting

Tony Lopez is a Senior Managing Director in FTI Consulting’s SEC Advisory and Technical Accounting practice in Washington, D.C. Mr. Lopez has over 19 years of experience providing a wide range of consulting services to management and boards of directors of public companies, legal counsel and audit firms. Mr. Lopez specializes in responding to inquiries from or communications with the Division of Corporation Finance, the Division of Enforcement, and the Office of the Chief Accountant of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regarding compliance with GAAP and SEC rules. Mr. Lopez has been consulted on over 25 stock option backdating matters being either reviewed by the SEC’s Division of Enforcement or pre-cleared with the Office of the Chief Accountant. In addition, Mr. Lopez has provided expert witness services to help legal counsel determine potential causes of action and recoveries on various accounting and auditing matters.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Lopez spent his 19-year career primarily resolving complex U.S. GAAP and SEC issues. Most recently, Mr. Lopez was an Official in the Office of the Chief Accountant of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In that role, he was responsible for interpreting U.S. GAAP through consultation with registrants and other SEC divisions on accounting, reporting, and emerging issues in the areas of revenue recognition, business combinations, leasing, long-lived assets, and stock compensation. He participated in the oversight of the accounting standard-setting process and in that role he liaised with staff and members of the FASB, the EITF, the IASB, the IFRIC, and IOSCO. In 2006, Mr. Lopez participated in training SEC staff accountants and attorney reviewers in the application of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) to the SEC filings of foreign private issuers as part of the SEC’s convergence project. Mr. Lopez also interacted with global thought leaders of the Big 4 firms on IFRS/US GAAP convergence issues.

Mr. Lopez served as a national office consultant of a Big 4 firm where he consulted with partners and professional staff on complex accounting, auditing and SEC reporting issues with emphasis in revenue recognition, business combinations, stock compensation, consolidations, equity method, joint ventures, and emerging issues.

Mr. Lopez also served as a technical staff member of the FASB where he collaborated with Board members in promulgating U.S. accounting standards. Mr. Lopez monitored international accounting standard developments in other countries, interacted with their boards and staffs, collaborated on joint accounting research papers, and served as a liaison to the Council of the Securities Regulators of the Americas.

Mr. Lopez has also served as a corporate vice-president of several global Fortune 100 telecommunication companies in which he was responsible for accounting, reporting, and regulatory compliance. Mr. Lopez began his career as an auditor with a Big 4 firm.
