At 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, Stropes and Dominion Vice President and Chief Risk Officer Christine Schwab will explore how two companies in different industries have approached risk assessments. Schwab will share Dominion's unique program design, including the communication strategy employed to get "buy in" across the organization; Samuelson will explain BNSFs assessment process, including a discussion of their heat maps and the ongoing monitoring of risks.

Stropes is filling in for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Director of Corporate Audit Services Nannette Samuelson, who had to cancel due to a personal matter.

Later in the day (3:15 p.m.), Schwab and Samuelson will host an informal conversation with other risk executives to discuss the challenges identified at the companies of attendees.

Dave Stropes Dave Stropes is Vice President Corporate Audit Services for The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company. He is responsible for leading BNSF’s corporate audit program. This program’s objective is to provide independent opinions and recommendations to all levels of management in the following areas:
  • Reliability of information
  • Adequacy of management controls & management processes
  • Safeguarding of company assets
  • Compliance with policies and procedures

He reports to Matthew K. Rose, BNSF’s Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Before being named to his present position in May of 2004, Stropes had served as Assistant Vice President Consumer Accounts Marketing and Sales since September 2002.

Stropes joined BNSF in 1984 and served in a variety of positions in the company’s Accounting and Finance departments prior to his marketing role. From 2001 to 2002 he served as Assistant Vice President and Assistant Controller with responsibility for the company’s external reporting, expense budgeting, capital budgeting, planning and strategic studies functions. While in the Finance department, Dave also helped to develop BNSF’s activity based costing system, managed the company’s diesel fuel hedging program, performed merger, acquisition and divestiture analysis, and managed the company’s long-term debt portfolio.

Stropes is a certified public accountant, holds a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from Northern Illinois University and a Masters of Management Degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
